A Word from the Author

Author Richard LetourneauThe idea for Newton started about fifteen years ago when i wrote a few short stories and just came up with the name Newton for the setting. I have no idea what happened to the old writing, earlier this year I saw a note on my facebook. It was a few paragraphs I wrote about four years ago where a killer was kidnapping people, torturing and killing them in his basement whiles wearing a clown mask. I knew I had to make this into a story but then I had the idea of making it a series. A series showing the past and present history as well as being separate tales about twisted individuals.
I did some research on what I would like it to look like and looked at history in my local area as well as writing several A4 pages for plots and characters. I soon had six plots, all of which changed a little over time as did the characters. All of my inspiration grew from that one note I made a few years ago. Everything I have written has been carefully planned out and thought through many times.
The Engagement started from that one scene, the difficult part was coming up with a gripping plot. It actually started out as a 7500 word short story which I liked but felt it wasn’t telling enough about Sally. After a week I had expanded it and went back to a previous relationship she had. It had to be shocking and quite realistic as well as disturbing.
It was a pleasure to write The Engagement and I didn’t hold back with the plot or violence as I wanted to create a series of shocking stories that not only slap you in the face with plot twist but throttle you to death after.
Room 242 was going to be a separate story but once I started it I knew it had to be part of the series. It was twisted and sadistic and not only follows the life of Lisa but that of the killer also. I wanted to pull the reader deep into the killer’s world, right into his room in this case. I heard about red rooms from my time on Youtube and thought it would be a good idea to write a story about one.
The hardest part with Room 242 was trying to keep it interesting and not repeat things again and again. I knew I had to create a love interest to push the story further and focus on something other than the torture and I already had the idea for Deep Web and ended up changing the love interest and climax to Justin Dawson. Room 242 raises a few questions especially at the end so when it came to writing Deep Web I wanted to answer them but make the reader wait to discover the answers.
When it came to writing Deep Web I had to now think of the viewer, what he saw, felt and did. I also had to look back at Room 242 and write it from his perspective. I had to think of Justin’s history and how it made him the man he is today but then I had to answer all the questions I raised in Room 242 and once more leave you with a punch in the face as we reach the climax.
I had to do a fair bit of research with deep web sites which I ended up cutting out of the final story. I enjoy taking my reader as far out of their comfort zone as much as I can. I also asked a few people about their phobias and tried to get parts of them into the stories. Being vulnerable, tortured, the feeling of being watched and followed. The real scenario of a violent relationship and even cannibals ended up becoming integral to the stories. And as we get to the final 3 everything you have experienced so far will come back to haunt you in ways you cannot imagine. Welcome to the sadists paradise and your hell, welcome to Newton.
