A Word from the Author
Sand & Sutures, the second book in the Scrubs series, reintroduces many of the same characters from the first book, and introduces a few new ones. This story follows the medical students from Scrubs, who are now doctors, into their residency. The main character, Randy, is in an OB/GYN residency at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. Jim is in San Francisco working as an ER resident. Bruce is down in L.A. learning how to be a neurosurgeon, and Amanda is in a pediatrics program. Although the four friends are continuing their medical training in different locations, they still keep in touch. They work hard to establish themselves in the medical community while they struggle to find balance between their careers and their personal lives. Together, they celebrate life events, offer each other counsel, and support one another through tough times.
I chose the title Sand & Sutures for symbolic reasons. The characters in this book are doctors who work in medical facilities and have to deal with sutures in one form or another on a regular basis. Also, they all live around water. The shores of Lake Washington, the Pacific surf, and the beaches of Santa Monica provide respite from their demanding schedules. When they aren’t being doctors, they enjoy water skiing, surfing, and vacationing on sand-filled beaches. The two words, sand and sutures, create a link between the professional lives of these physicians and their personal escape from that world.
