Author Mike Scantlebury

Bio

Mike Scantlebury started writing crime and Mystery novels in 1990, all set in the North West of England. The greatest mystery he has come across so far is that there are more than six other people with his name in the world, half of whom have published books and one (a Pastor in Vancouver, Canada), has a Bibliography twice as long as Mike in Manchester, England.

Our Mike Scantlebury created a hero called ‘Mickey from Manchester’, a rough, tough, adventurer, who is neither a cop nor a Private Detective. Just a private citizen with a shady past and rather special abilities that set him apart. At the present time, the facts that ‘Mickey’ isn’t from Manchester has been revealed; the fact that ‘Mickey’ isn’t his real name; and ‘Mickey’ doesn’t even live in Manchester anymore, but has moved to Salford, the ancient city across the river.

Mike lives there too, with his partner. They are both creative people. They write songs, perform together and run a weekly radio show (which is podcasted on SoundCloud). They are also very much part of the landscape in Salford. They live across the road from the BBC, the national broadcaster, secure in their Regional Headquarters. (In Mike’s books, Special Agent Amelia Hartliss works in the office block next door.)

Mickey came first and Melia didn’t appear in her own series until 2005, but the two conduct an on-off romance and often pop up in each other’s books. Mike the author likes to see them get on, but their work divides them, especially as Manchester is now a vibrant and important place in England, second only to London, the capital. From Salford, the Manchester ‘regional centre’ can be viewed with detachment and a certain dispassion. Passion is best left to fictional characters, Mike says, and when you ask him why he won’t allow them to swear – he merely smiles.
