A Word from the Author
Takers was my first (and so far, only) foray into writing vampires. In fact, I never thought I’d even be interested in vampires beyond loving the likes of Christopher Lee in the role. And then something opened my eyes to seeing vampires in a different way.
For a time, working as a journalist for the now-defunct website Hawaii Five-0 Online, I undertook watching previous roles that its two main stars, Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, had undertaken before they did Hawaii Five-0. I then did reviews of those movies and television shows for the site. One of the TV series O’Loughlin was in briefly was CBS’ Moonlight, about a vampire private investigator. I had never quite seen a vampire like that (not that I’d ever really sought them out, mind you) and it really got me to thinking.
By the time I finished watching the sadly short-lived series, the Takers protagonist Kel, a loner hard-boiled Los Angeles homicide detective, was pretty well-formed. It was like he showed up one night and said, “Okay, let’s do this.” So do it I did…for four books! I was quite proud that this first book in the series – the first book I’d ever gotten published – won the 2012 Global Ebook Award for “Best Speculative Fiction – Contemporary Fantasy (set after 1940).” I figured I must have done something right with my vampires…who don’t only need your blood to survive, by the way. That’s why the tagline to the series is, “Your blood is only the beginning…”
I very much hope you enjoy Takers…it’s quite a wild ride!
