A Word from the Author
My second book of poetry, following 2017’s “Minor Revelations”, came to me quickly, as if the poems channeled through me. Morning after morning I found myself with a notebook or steno pad, holding one thought, one word or phrase, something I glanced at or read in an early morning book. Some action, like the opening of a surprise door, took place and line after line fell out. The book was written in something like four months. The poems in “Dictation from the Backyard” are more expansive than those of my first book of poetry, their stories detailed while remaining casual. I’d like to think I carried on, at least a little, in the tradition of William Carlos Williams, with maybe a smidge of Allen Ginsberg and Mary Oliver added for taste. Locales offering inspiration stretch from the tip of Cape Cod to the far end of the pier at San Diego’s Ocean Beach.
I hope the reader will enjoy these creations.
