A Word from the Author
I’ve always been drawn to science fiction, devoured it, particularly short stories from the golden age. Names like Asimov, del Rey, Leinster, Sturgeon and van Vogt filled my bookshelves.
There’s a particular joy with short story sci-fi. You can pick it up, read it, engage with the characters and plot, and have it finished within half an hour. It doesn’t ask you to commit to three sequels, a convoluted plot line or even to reading monogamy. It is what it is, a short detour, a quick dalliance, a pleasant distraction from the everyday. A way to explore one idea, one theme, one thought.
A few years ago I realised that for everything I’d received from sci-fi I had given nothing back, so I started to write the occasional story, circulate it, just for the pleasure of writing.
I have put my best twenty-three short stories together in one place, this book. The earliest story saw the light of day in 1998, the latest a mere six months ago. As the title, so the stories. They are fragments of my imagination, released from the near constant cacophony of the everyday.
