‘This is a richly drawn novel. The historical figures walk off the page’ – The Coffee Pot Book Club

As the struggle between York and Lancaster continues, Margaret Beaufort fights for admittance to the court of the victorious Edward IV of York and his unpopular queen, Elizabeth Woodville.

The old king and his heir are dead, York now rules over England and the royal nursery is full.

But Edward and Elizabeth’s magnificent court hides a dark secret, a deception that threatens the security of the English throne … and all who lust after it.

In 1483, with the untimely death of the King, Margaret finds herself at the heart of chain of events that threaten the supremacy of York, and will change England forever.

The Beaufort Woman: One woman’s selfless struggle for the rights of her son.

A Word from the Author

The research for The Beaufort Woman was piled so high on my desk it was like living in a crenellated castle but all the hard work was so worthwhile. The war of the roses and the deaths of the princes in the tower are well known stories in which Margaret is often given a negative role. This time she tells the story in her own words.

The war of the roses are now in full swing. Henry VI has been deposed, and his queen, Margaret of Anjou goes all out to win back the throne for her son, Edward of Lancaster. Less than a year after the birth of Henry Tudor, Margaret marries Harry Stafford, a younger son of the Duke of Buckingham and with his help secures a place in the Yorkist court of Edward IV.

Margaret serves Edward loyally, and is a prominent member of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s household. When Harry Stafford dies from wounds sustained at the Battle of Barnet, Margaret quickly remarries, this time choosing the powerful northern magnate, Thomas Stanley, a close friend and confidant of the king.

Margaret’s only desire is for the return of her son, Henry, from exile and his reinstatement as the Earl of Richmond. She is on the cusp of Edward agreeing to his pardon when the king dies suddenly, leaving his thirteen year old son, Edward, as heir.

While the arrangements of the coronation are underway, the Protector, Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, declares Edward’s heirs bastards and takes the throne for himself. At first, Margaret serves Richard III, and is given the honour of bearing Queen Anne’s train at the coronation but is soon caught up in a power struggle that culminates in victory at the Battle of Bosworth where Henry is crowned king of England.
