Circle of Books Review
This historical fiction novel was a very good and interesting read. It was the first time I read about Dalriada and Fergus Mór the founder of Scotland. The story starts with a young Erc — Fergus’ father and from there it continues through out Fergus’ whole life. The author does a great job in bringing all characters to life, in my opinion especially Fergus and his siblings – as this is his story after all. I enjoyed a lot reading about his wife, how they met and eventually got married. There is also a good amount of information about certain areas of interest such as horsemanship, warfare and nautical knowledge without being too much. As always I love reading about life in historical times, in this case the story takes place in the 5th century. The Christian faith is coming to those latitudes, some hate it and still follow the old ways of the druids and others accept the new faith. The monks build schools and also monasteries. They help the destitute and orphans. The shores of Ireland are regularly attacked. It was a time people were and had to be strong in order to survive. Humanity is portrayed in its best and worst; we read about terrible things people did for power but also read about some really amazing heroic deeds too. Hate, enmity, compassion, friendship and love are all well represented in this novel, the story is well balanced and touching.
