Interview Anthony Ruggiero
Interview
– When did you start writing novels, what moved you to start writing?
I’ve always had a strong interest in writing. When I was younger, I would fill countless journals with made-up historical figures based on real historical figures I found in my research. I would begin writing articles based on real historical events and people. I’ve always loved history and education. Through writing, I feel that I am able to share more with my students and fellow educators alike. I started researching and writing about Mary Tudor because I felt that there was more to her story than what was taught in the classroom. I hope that through my book readers are able to learn more about her life and her reign as queen.
– In what genres do you write? Do you plan writing in other genres?
I primarily write historical, non-fiction. I definitely would like to try writing historical fiction in the future.
– Tell us about your novels. Why should everyone buy them?
My book, Mary Tudor: A Story of Triumph, Sorrow and Fire, discusses the early life and reign of England’s first Queen Regnant, Mary I. History depicts Mary as this monster who burned hundreds of protestants. While this is a fair character analysis, I feel that people should buy my book in order to gain a further in-depth analysis of what led her to this decision-making as queen. I hope that people gain a different perspective of her as a person.
– What is your all time favorite novel/book? What makes it special?
My favorite book was Eugenia Ginzburg’s memoir, Journey Into the Whirlwind. I admired Ginzburg’s survival and strength as a prisoner in Stalin’s regime of the Soviet Union.
– Tell us a bit about your writing process.
Organization is a key component to my writing process. I often create a storyboard to help me decide what I want to research and what I want my readers to learn from what I write. Furthermore, I also try to combine the use of secondary and primary sources within my writing in order to bring authenticity to my work.
– What author would you love to have dinner with?
An author who I would like to have dinner with is Dr. Linda Porter. As an avid Tudor Historian, I would love to discuss all the facts and knowledge she’s learned through her research.
– Tell us about your hobbies and passions other than writing.
A passion of mine is teaching. Despite its challenges, I greatly enjoy sharing my love of history with my students, as well as inspiring them to think critically.
– We have many followers who would like to start writing a book or are already writing their first novel, any advice for these brave people?
There is no denying that it is a lot of work, however, do not give up on your dream and reflect as to why you’re writing your book/novel. It is so satisfying holding your first printed book in your hands and it is certainly worth it.
– How often do you write, daily, every other day or?
I write daily. When a topic fascinates me, I want to learn more and begin researching, as well as writing.
– How is it to be an author in your country? Do you have a good support from the local public?
It is honor to be able to contribute my work both in the United States, as well as globally. I am fortunate to have amazing family and friends who have supported me through this experience.
