Interview – E.L DuBois
The Glass Mask
– When did you start writing stories/novels, what moved you to start writing? I have always loved stories.
As a child I would close my eyes and imagine my own fairytales to put myself to sleep. Writing just came naturally to me.
– In what genres do you write? Do you plan writing in other genres?
My upcoming novel is a psychological thriller. After that I have a Paranormal thriller series called Ransom, TX
– Tell us about your novels. Why should everyone buy them?
They are thrillers and full of suspense.
The Glass Mask has an important message about survival. I was going through the healing process trying to understand the dynamic between a victim and their abuser. It is rollercoaster, on every level. There is literally never a dull moment. I use to joke that I felt like I was living in a Lifetime movie and had “how is this even real” moments on a daily basis. Much like Beauty I never knew what the next drama would be but I always knew there would be one and I needed to be prepared for it. I also knew it would probably be something so outlandish it would leave me shaking my head in disbelief. So in the book I try to give the reader that sense of expectation.
I also have a really cool Paranormal Horror/Thriller called Ransom Texas that is a series. Growing up I loved “From Dusk till Dawn” and anything paranormal, so I always wanted to create something with that edgy paranormal feel to it. After living in West Texas during my early 20s I got the spooky vibe the desert has. When you are isolated and there isn’t another town for at least a hundred miles bad stuff can happen and no one would be the wiser for days, weeks, or maybe never. One day I was talking to my brother and it came to me. What if a small town golden boy was forced into a fall from grace because of a destiny he had no idea existed. Throw in Texas, where football is king and I had the makings of Ransom. Since I am of Native American decent I wanted to incorporate that aspect so I did allot of research into folklore and origin stories for tribes native to West Texas. I took a little from each story and went from there. I wanted to pay homage to my Texas roots as well so in the end I was able to create a truly unique experience for the reader that will leave them on the edge of their seats up until the very end.
– What is your all-time favorite novel? What makes it special?
I love paranormal romance or a good LOL romantic comedy. I have so many books I love but if I had to pick just one series it would be Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole. I want to be Nix or Regan when I grow up. Either way I get to be a Valkyrie and those are some tough chicks!
– Tell us a bit about your writing process.
When an idea hits I am consumed by it. I live and breath the story. My characters are real to me so they each hold a special place in my heart. When I write I give a small piece of myself to each story. I am lucky to have such a loving and understanding family to put up with me…LOL
– What author would you love to have dinner with?
Does it have to be just one??? Kresley Cole, JR Ward, Dakota Cassidy, Molly Harper, Dannika Dark, Erin Watt, Sara Ney, Meghan March, my list is endless I think they are all brilliant
– Tell us about your hobbies and passions other than writing.
I am an advocate for many anti-abuse causes. In my limited free time I love to paint, and read of course! I love traveling and most importantly I love enjoying this beautiful life with my family and for babies. After my experiences I do not take any of it for granted.
– We have many followers who would like to start writing a book or are already writing their first novel, any advice for these brave people?
Never give up and trust in your dreams. Every one of us is born with a voice so use it to do good in this world and create literary magic!
– How often do you write, daily, every other day or?
I try to write daily
– Do you keep a notebook with ideas for your novels? If so do you carry the notebook with you so you won’t forget any ideas?
Yes and yes. I have the attention span of a squirrel and Mombie brain!
– How important is research when writing your books?
Very important, no matter the subject.
– What are you reading at the moment?
The Thief by JR Ward, normally I get her books the day they come out and I devour them within a day or two but I have been so busy this one is taking me longer.
– Certainly, you have had some interesting episodes as an author, fans related or others, share one of them with us.
The Glass Mask is my debut novel so I have not had anything very interesting happen yet but I am sure it will once the book comes out. I am learning to navigate the random world of social media so that has been interesting to say the least.
– A final message for our circleofbooks.com readers.
Dear Reader,
I would like to sincerely thank you for taking time to read this interview and hopefully check out my book.
As we say in the south “take a load off and sit a spell”. Enjoy the ride!
On a serious note, I do appreciate all the love and support that is being shown to “The Glass Mask: Monsters Lurk Beneath”.
This has been a long journey, and I am truly grateful for all the positive response it is receiving. The context of this book is one that is very close to my heart, and it is amazing to see the book resonate with people around the world.
We are living in a time of change, and it is my greatest hope that my daughter knows that no one ever has the right to keep her silent.
If someone had told me ten years ago that I would be here in this moment using my voice to tell this story I would not have believed them. However, here I am and I will forever be thankful! Believe in your dreams and yourself!
Much love and appreciation to you all!
