Interview – Rachael Jane Kirby
Interview
– When did you start writing novels, what moved you to start writing?
I started writing when I was a young mother. My first son was born with some problems and I wrote to help as a coping mechanism. Writing helped me with dealing with what was a difficult time. My dogs have also been an inspiration to me, no matter how you feel or how down you are, they always show their love and devotion. I wanted to use this in my writing of children`s stories.
– Tell us about your book. Why should everyone buy it?
A Pack of Jacks is both educational and inspirational, while being fun and happy. It bridges the gap between people and animals and shows that dogs do not discriminate. The rhymes tell cute but real tales of what has happened with them and I have used them in hope that children will enjoy the story but also learn some of the lessons hidden within.
– What is your all time favorite novel/book? What makes it special?
I am a big fan of romance novels, I have read a lot of Jilly Cooper, I also love scifi.
– Tell us a bit about your writing process.
I have an idea, which often comes from real life. I then make written notes and build on them. With a pack of jacks, the stories have all come from my dogs, they are a real inspiration.
– What author would you love to have dinner with?
Jilly Cooper, she likes horses and romance.
– Tell us about your hobbies and passions other than writing.
I love the dogs, I walk them often. I also love horse riding. I am also a big movie fan.
– We have many followers who would like to start writing a book or are already writing their first book, any advice for these brave people?
If you have an idea or passion, keep going. Take what advice you can. Do not take criticism to heart, don’t let it stop you.
– How often do you write, daily, every other day or?
I have spates of writing. At least a few times a week and often keep going late into the nights. I have many things started but not finished as I get new ideas. I should concentrate on them really.
– How important is it to get your facts right and are there any instances when you bend history to fit your story?
I have written a sci-fi romance novel with many made up inventions and devices, which I think could be picked to pieces, but I think with good descriptions and making them believable, it works well. I have never changed history though, only the future.
– What are you reading at the moment?
I am currently reading a sci-fi romance, called Polaris Rises by Jessie Mihalik.
– How is it to be an author in your country? Do you have a good support from the local public?
I live in the UK, there are many authors who aspire to be the next JK. I am happy to share my work with whoever enjoys it.
– Certainly you have had some interesting episodes as an author, fans related or others, share one of them with us.
I would love to say I have fans, but I am nowhere near this yet. The only funny episode I had was, I became very good friends with the late Dave Prowse (may he rest in peace), we would meet at conventions around the UK and often went for dinner. Dave knew about a sci-fi romance that I was writing and would often introduce me to his celebrity friends such as Mark Hamil and other actors, etc, as ‘my author friend’. I was nowhere near an author at this time but found it funny.
