Interview

When did you start writing, what moved you to start writing?

I started writing in my early twenties (I’m 42 now). The Roar of a Dragon started about that time, but it took a long time to write because I wasn’t quite sure what the story was going to be. When I got diagnosed with a vestibular condition in 2008, the book became my passion, and the rest is history!

– Tell us about your lastest book The Cry of a Raven. Why should everyone buy it?

The Cry of a Raven is the culmination of The Roar of a Dragon series. If you enjoy fantasy books, The Cry of a Raven gives you your magic, dragons, and battles. But there is a deep story centered around love, friendship, and emotional turmoil. There is a great deal of personal struggles with most of the characters, and hopefully that helps cultivate the intrigue of who might or may not survive.

– What is your all time favorite novel/book? What makes it special?

I don’t know that I have a favorite novel, but I love the Dragonlance series by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis. They do such a great job of writing great characters and it’s very easy to connect with them.

– Tell us a bit about your writing process.

I wish I had a process to tell you about! (laughs) Truth is, I don’t write as often as I should. It comes in bursts throughout the year. As far as the actual writing goes, I think about my work constantly, so when I sit down to write, I have a pretty good idea of what I’m writing.

– What author would you love to have dinner with?

Stephen King, I think. I think it would be very interesting to sit down and have a conversation with him.

– Tell us about your hobbies and passions other than writing.

I’m a gamer, so I typically play a lot of video games, both alone and with my two boys. I also love to watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, and generally spend a lot of time with my family.

– We have many followers who would like to start writing a book or are already writing their first book, any advice for these brave people?

Brave, indeed. Writing is not easy at all and takes a lot of time and patience. But ultimately, it is very rewarding, and those that have a passion for writing or a story they want to tell should stick with it to the very end. The best advice I’ve ever received came from a friend of mine who said, “Don’t ever stop thinking about your writing.” That advice has stuck with me and made my writing experience a great deal easier than it would have been otherwise.

– How often do you write, daily, every other day or?

As stated earlier, not nearly enough. (laughs) When I do get the urge to write, it can often go on for months at a time.

– What are you reading at the moment?

As with writing, I don’t read as much as I should or used to. I’ve been trying to read more of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books – my girlfriend is a big fan and wants me to catch up so we can talk about it.

– How is it to be an author in your country? Do you have good support from the local public?

From those that actually know that I’m an author, I have great support! (laughs) It’s very difficult to break through as an author, so I can’t really say that it has affected my life a great deal.

– Certainly you have had some interesting episodes as an author, fans related or others, share one of them with us.

Most of my interesting episodes as an author come from people finding out that I’m actually an author. They’re usually shocked and amazed. Although, it’s kind of fun to point out that I started dating my girlfriend with whom I had my second child after I’d started writing The Roar of a Dragon. She’d always wanted to name her child Aidan, which is the main character’s name in my book. Needless to say, I had no problem with this. (laughs)
