Interview Wendy Waters
Interview
– When did you start writing novels, what moved you to start writing?
I started writing novels when I lived in America in the 90s. I had been an actress/singer and always dabbled in poetry and prose but decided then to try my hand at writing a full-length novel. Over the years I have refined my writer’s voice and style.
– In what genres do you write? Do you plan writing in other genres?
I don’t write in any specific genre. But I will always include an Otherworldly aspect to my work.
– Tell us about your books. Why should everyone buy them?
My novels delve into the psychological aspects of life that drive many of us towards the pursuit of excellence. I try to forge pathways towards recovery and redemption in all my characters and ultimately I support their self-expression. I believe my readers will find themselves reflected in my characters and enjoy my passion for language and music, which underscores my text.
– What is your all time favorite novel/book? What makes it special?
It’s a tough question. I have so many but perhaps it will always be Wuthering Heights for its raw passion, spiritual graft, exquisite language and vibrancy. Emily was also a brilliant poet and musical rhythm flows through her masterpiece.
– Tell us a bit about your writing process.
Nothing happens until I have the first line. Once I have that the story unfolds. I get inside the characters’ heads and souls and write from that space. I never plot. I let the characters tell me their story.
– What author would you love to have dinner with?
Oscar Wilde.
– Tell us about your hobbies and passions other than writing.
I am passionate about gardening and theatre.
– We have many followers who would like to start writing a book or are already writing their first novel, any advice for these brave people?
Start with a diary.
– How often do you write, daily, every other day or?
I have no schedule but when I’m working on a novel I try to write a little each day. I don’t rush the process.
– Do you keep a notebook with ideas for your books? If so do you carry the notebook with you so you won’t forget any ideas?
No. I have a switch in my brain that activates when I sit down to write. Without meaning to sound too peculiar I enter a different space, the world of my novel.
– How important is it to have your facts right and are there any instances when you bend history to fit your story?
Facts can also be expressed as spiritual or psychological “facts” I tend to put the story ahead of details but with Fields of Grace I tried to get accuracy about the 30s in terms of prices, popular items, historical details because it supported the storyline.
– What are you reading at the moment?
Alexander by Mary Renault.
– How is it to be an author in your country? Do you have a good support from the local public?
No. Australia is arguably one of the least supportive countries on earth for artists of every stripe. Mine is a sporting nation with a deplorable lack of awareness around the potency and value of art.
– Certainly you have had some interesting episodes as an author, fans related or others, share one of them with us.
