A Thorne for a Crown by Lorel Clayton
A Thorne for a Crown is the second book of the Eva Thorne series by Lorel Clayton
The first real case femme fatale turned private eye, Eva Thorne, has had in months may be more than she can handle. King Rutgard has been kidnapped, only he’s not entirely alive, which makes finding him difficult. What’s more, dwarf men are joining the suffragist movement in droves to win freedom from the matriarchy, and there’s a werewolf terrorist in town causing chaos. Eva needs a case like this to make her reputation, but she has problems of her own. Dark magic is rising in her, the Thorne legacy, and she can’t control it. She has to find a way or risk imprisonment by the jackbooted elf soldiers who are cracking down on illegal necromancy and worship of the Dead God. Worse, the God of Death wants her soul, as does her twin sister, so Eva denies her magic and hides from her family. But some things are impossible to hide from, like the tax collector … and love.
A Word from the Author
The second Eva Thorne book was even easier to write than the first. We knew Eva and her world by then and instead of getting tired of it, endless possibilities had opened up. If anything, the problem was trimming down our ideas to fit in a logical plot. The first chapter is almost unchanged from the first draft, it flowed so easily. Except for the exception of one character-wonder if you can guess which? The other sticking point was in the middle. I always do an outline edit in the middle, but we worked out the problems. It’s vital to keep the tension just right and the stakes high to carry your readers through to the climax. We finally worked it out, and ended up writing the second book in about 10 months. It could have been 6 months if full-time work, a post-graduate degree, and dealing with our son’s autism hadn’t been thrown at us. Authors never say no to life experiences though. Everything can be dealt with through the therapy of writing. What’s more, we got better. Eva Thorne Book 2 is hands down a better novel than the first, which was pretty good. We’ve got even bigger things planned for the rest of the series. You know how all those cool private investigators have interesting or mysterious backstories? We decided to make Eva books 1-4 the exciting backstory, because I hate prequels. It’s going to wow you. Enjoy the ride!
