The Marsden Family drama moves to 1939 and the next generation

Intertwined with historical events, we experience the social climate in the country, as it moves closer to war, as seen through the eyes of the various members of the family.

Using extensive research, award-winning author, Alan Reynolds, brings the past to life at a pivotal time in English history in a compelling novel. The increasing threat from Hitler, and the British Government’s attempt at appeasement; the IRA bombing campaign, and the efforts of the British Secret Service to thwart their aims, are among the key events which shaped the world in these very uncertain times.

…But not everyone will see the outbreak of hostilities.

A Word from the Author

Author Alan Reynolds

Following the success of the Marsden Family trilogy (The Baker’s Story, Arthur’s War, The Last Poppy), award winning author, Alan Reynolds, takes the family saga to 1939 and the run up to the Second World War. While Prime Minister Chamberlain’s Government was adopting a policy of appeasement, Adolf Hitler was embarking on an expansionist programme which would eventually have deadly consequences for the world. In the Yorkshire bakery, life goes on as normal as the next generation of the Marsden family make their way in a rapidly changing world. ‘Why would anyone want to go through a war again?’ was a good enough reason for ignoring the disturbing reports emanating from Europe. Other, seemingly more pressing events were concentrating the minds of the British Secret Service as they battled against the threat of Irish Republicans and their bombing campaign. Using extensive research, the author weaves the lives of the Marsden family with real events that take place as a precursor to war in what were truly uncertain times.
