Eighty five ‘wee gems’ in a single book …

A Dash of Flash is an eclectic mix of stories with both contemporary and historical settings, plus a few fairy tales and ghost stories added for good measure.
Step inside and join the many and varied characters at their times of joy or sorrow, remorse or loss. Laugh at their foibles, commiserate with their grief and indulge with them as they reminisce. Or simply smile at the fantasy of the tale.
Glimpse them all for but a mere flash in time…

A Word from the Author

author-millie-thom-pictureA Dash of Flash is a collection of 85 very short stories. A few are as short as 100 words, several are longer at 1,000 words, but most fall somewhere in between with the majority being between 175 and 300 words. The genres are just as varied, ranging from contemporary and historical to a few fairy tales and ghost stories.

Many of the stories originally written for my blog have been either extended or tweaked in some way. Other stories have been written solely for the book – especially the longer ones, which reach the upper word limit for ‘flash’ at 1,000 words. The total word count of the book is 22, 290 words, as long as many novellas which can weigh in at 18,000 words.

Flash fiction has grown in popularity over the last ten years although, I confess, I’d never heard of it until I was persuaded by a fellow blogger to join in with one of the challenges on WordPress. I very quickly became hooked, and found I really enjoyed writing these pieces of micro-fiction, as flash fiction is often called. I also soon found that some of the prompts presented for the challenges allowed me to delve into the past, so further indulging my love of historical fiction. Some of the stories are intended to amuse, others to be thought-provoking. I simply hope that people can find most of the stories entertaining, if only for a brief moment in time.

I have included images for over 50 of the 85 stories in my book, generally for the visual effect. The original images provided by WordPress bloggers were copyright, but I found I had photos of my own that would suit a few of the stories and for the rest I relied on Shutterstock or Pixabay.
A Dash of Flash is my third book. The final book of my Viking trilogy, Wyvern of Wessex, will be my fourth – once it’s finished.
