Know More

Alori, a teenage White girl from New York, moves to an all-Black island in the Caribbean with her parents and older sister. Considered to be an outsider, she struggles as she slowly makes friends in her neighborhood and school. Soon though, Alori realizes that there is a dark force lurking within the tiny island of Grenada when she starts to experience recurring nightmares, seeing shape shifters, and notices that everyone she is drawn to ends up strangely getting hurt. She then sets out to get to the truth of what is plaguing all of her friends and the rest of the people in Grenada.

A Word from the Author

Alori Zander, like any typical teenager, has a lot of important things on her mind. She worries about school, her social life, and struggles with her self esteem. She’s neither the bravest nor the loudest, but she’s going to have to learn to be.

In her mother’s desire to experience other cultures, she uproots her family and moves them to Grenada- a little paradise under the sun. As if adjusting to a new culture isn’t hard enough, Alori somehow got herself entangled in the supernatural population of the island.

People only show you what they want you to see and unfortunately for her there are a lot of things her new friends keep out of sight.

The sun’s rays doesn’t reach every corner.

Circle of Books Review

After her family moves from New York to Grenada, Alori just like many other teenagers, worries about her new school and if she will be able to make new friends. That being her week point, she struggled to make friends when she lived in NYC and logically now she wonders how will it be in this new place. But there is a huge surprise in store for  her as this will prove to be the least of her problems! For a dark mystery enfolds Grenada and its inhabitants and she will find herself completely immersed in it. This will affect her in such a way that she will barely recognize herself when she starts thinking and doing things that she never dreamed of before.

Author Krystal Cyrus has created well rounded and engaging characters who evolve emotionally and psychologically during the narrative and realistically show their good and not so good/bad/dark sides in different proportions. It certainly comes across that the author knows what it is to be a teenager: their dreams, fears and behavior when dealing with other teenagers but also when interacting with their own families. I really liked that the author didn’t fall in the that trap of continuing to create new characters or subplots and that while the story unfolds we learn many lessons about love, friendship, courage, sacrifice and selflessness.  The story is a good blend of paranormal mystery and thriller, many things are not what they seem and only as the story unfolds we start to get glimpses of what’s really going on and there is a very good build up of conflict and tension that makes this book an unstoppable page turner as we want to know what will happen next.
