Devastated by the tragic death of their parents, Camryn and Toby Hunter find themselves alone in the Idaho wilderness. When Toby discovers a pair of gold rings, he and Camryn are magically transported into a mystical land they’ve never seen before. Their only known exit is immediately sealed off, and they find themselves surrounded by mythical creatures, a beautiful waterfall oasis, and moss-covered Redwood trees with faces. Named as “the Guardian” by the locals, Toby is faced with a life-changing task. He and his sister can only return home when the elements are reunited and peace is restored to the land of Gelnoff. With only two gold rings, ten days’ worth of supplies, and the guidance of a wise, old Redwood tree, Toby and Camryn begin the journey of a lifetime.

A Word from the Author

Author L. M. Nelson 320x461Have you ever had a dream so vivid and so detailed that it stuck with you for days or even months? That’s how The Guardian came to be. A dream. A very vivid dream.

I’ve always been a lover of fantasy books and sci-fi movies. As a child, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite books. I loved the world of Winnie the Pooh and floated away to Neverland with Peter Pan. I saw the very first Star Wars movie when I was a child and have been a fan ever since. Imaginary worlds fascinate me. The land of Pandora is one of my favorite imaginary worlds. I wish I could see its many moons, smell its rainforests, and hear the flying dragons screech across the the sky. I’d also love to visit Nabu, Narnia, and Hogwarts, or meet Yoda, Dumbledore, and Frodo.

Creating a fantasy world is a challenging endeavor, and I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. But as I began to piece together the images I had in my head, my imaginary world began to take shape. The characters came alive, and I began to feel the landscape – the sounds, the scents, the smells. Trees began to talk, rivers flowed, and glowing stones emitted rainbow colored hues. Although creating the land of Gelnoff challenged me as a writer, it was incredibly fun to write. I compiled all the vivid images I saw from my dreams and let my imagination take over.

In this book, you’ll see some familiar creatures like a Minotaur and a rock troll, but you’ll also meet talking Redwoods and a new fantasy creature called a Hawkstrich.

Know More

New York City—a thriving metropolis full of dreams. The bright lights of Times Square, the billboard posters promoting the latest musicals, and the theatre marquees up and down Broadway attract millions of theatre lovers every year. Lauren Hanson was no exception.

Prior to moving to New York, Lauren made every effort to make her dream of performing on Broadway a reality. She enrolled in dance classes, took voice lessons, and participated in various acting workshops. Now in her first year at the Juilliard School, she seeks to improve her craft and work her way into the professional world of musical theatre. A Broadway performer named Roger Zellers steers her in the right direction. His assistance becomes tainted, however, when a blast from his past tries to sabotage Lauren’s career. Harassment, lies, and openly violent threats make Lauren question Roger’s intentions.

While Lauren pursues the glamor of the Great White Way, Lauren’s twin sister tries to establish herself as a reputable choreographer. Having connections with Roger comes in handy when he asks her for a special favor. Through Roger, she meets other professionals, gains a new following, and finds potential love. But will her fairytale come true, or will her plans crumble to pieces in the hustle and bustle of New York City?

A Word from the Author

Author L. M. Nelson 320x461The closest I’ve ever come to performing in front of an audience was the brief 6 or 7 year period in my life when I sang spiritual songs with a small quartet and performed in the Easter Cantata with a local community choir. My children have both performed on stage, however. My son during elementary school plays and middle school band concerts. My daughter for choir performances, high school plays, halftime shows and concerts with for her high school and college marching band, and that year she marched in the Rose Parade. Although I’ve never performed on stage, I’ve always enjoyed theatre. I grew up watching musicals and have attended several traveling Broadway shows over the years. Among my favorites are Phantom of the Opera, Newsies, and Singin’ in the Rain.

When I planned the fourth and final book of the Scrubs series, I knew I wanted a character who was somehow linked with the performing arts. Since Center Stage focuses primarily on Randy’s twin daughters, and both are performers, having the girls connected to the theatre was crucial in developing the storyline. This is how Roger Zellers came to life.

There are many characters within this series I adore. But Roger is by far one of my favorites. He’s one of those characters who comes to life. If he was a real person, I would definitely befriend him. He’s just a down to earth guy who genuinely cares about people. He has a natural playful side and enjoys life. He’s talented, well-liked by everyone he meets, and fun to be around. He does, however, have a bit of dark past he doesn’t reveal to many people. Throughout Center Stage, we learn more and more about him and his past, and enjoy some of the experiences he faces as a professional in the performing arts world.

Center Stage touches on social and emotional issues young people go through as they leave the roost and go off on their own. Center Stage introduces you to new characters and brings back many of the ones from the pervious books. Because the Scrubs series is a family saga, the reader will see the characters grow up and matures throughout the series. It was a fun series to write, but it was hard to let go of the characters I have grown so close to over the years.

From the time he was old enough to hold a basketball, Nathan Hanson dreamed of playing in the NCAA. Now a senior at Lake Washington High School, Nathan is a top-notch athlete with aspirations of attending medical school. Well known for his skills on the court, Nathan’s name and face are plastered across every sports page in Seattle. When a college recruiter catches wind of his stats, Nathan receives a visit from the head coach of the University of Washington, bringing him one step closer to making his lifelong dream a reality.

But sometimes pursuing your dreams comes with a hefty price.

A Word from the Author

Author L. M. Nelson 320x461Beyond the Hardwood is the third book in the Scrubs series. The series itself has the same group of characters throughout. The first two books follow Randy Hanson and his friends through medical school and their individual residency placements. The third book, Beyond the Hardwood, focuses specifically on Randy’s son, Nathan.

Nathan Hanson is a high school basketball player with aspirations of medical school. He also dreams of playing in the NCAA. In the process of pursuing his dreams, he struggles to find balance in his life. To overcome this problem, he seeks advice from his father, who is a physician in Seattle, and his mother, who is a sports psychologist and former NCAA basketball player. He includes his long time girlfriend in his decision making process, and together they make plans for their futures. However, life doesn’t always go as planned. Certain events occur in Nathan’s life that could potentially threaten his plans.

This particular book gives a realistic account of significant events that help shape Nathan into the adult he becomes. Some events are celebratory, others are tragic, but all of them are learning opportunities that lead to growth. Although I didn’t personally face all of the issues Nathan does, each one of us has had personal roadblocks we’ve had to overcome in the pursuit our dreams. Nathan faces his own roadblocks, but he learns to utilize his strengths and find ways to improve on his weaknesses along the way. He gains a stronger understanding of the power of compromise, learns not to take anything for granted, and discovers the true value of friendship.

Nathan is one of my favorite characters in the Scrubs series. He’s down to earth, fun-loving, and just an all around good guy. He has a unique sense of humor and genuinely cares about people. He has his moments of weakness, just like every other human being, but through it all, he’s taught a valuable lesson in humility.

Nathan will return in the fourth book, Center Stage.
