As a high school teenager, Darius Morefield has arrived in a small, Southern mill town with his family. The mill closed soon after they arrived leaving them high and dry. In a high-stress encounter between husband and wife, his father storms out into the night and is immediately killed by a lightning bolt. Darius is nearby and profoundly affected emotionally and somewhat physically. The trauma gives him extrasensory insight into emotions and energies around him.
Darius encounters two fellow students his age who become his best friend, Alex a happy go lucky free spirit and Myrtle, a sparky independent girl to reckon with. They begin to stumble onto various dark issues. With an ostracised woman some believe to be a witch, they delve deeper into deaths past and present as Darius is drawn to an abandoned house where two crates rock in a closed room with nothing living present.
