Having helped people set up, buy, build and sell businesses for nearly 20 years, I began to see very clear patterns around the work-life balance and the longer term.

It became apparent to me that the modern life plan is outdated. Too many people slog their guts out and forget to enjoy the majority of their lives, chasing the promise of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, namely retirement.

However, far too many never get to enjoy this because they make themselves ill in the process or prevaricate about retiring and carry on working for too long. Too many people dream about things that they would like to do but spend the majority of their working lives playing it safe and wondering what might have been.

When they retire they are too shattered to do the things that they had dreamed about and spent the rest of their days regretting having wasted the opportunities that life offered them.
