Know More

27th June 1914. It was just another working day in the humdrum life of master baker, Arthur Marsden, and his family. As he mixed dough for the morning’s bread run, he had no concept of the change that was about to be unleashed, the repercussions of which would leave no corner of the world untouched.

In this powerful story, set in a West Yorkshire town, award-winning author, Alan Reynolds, charts the life of the Marsden family as the country sleepwalks into a conflict that will change lives forever.

Using detailed research, this is a moving saga reflecting the social conditions of the time through the eyes of a working-class family – women’s rights, industrial unrest, and a class war that teetered on the point of revolution.

A riveting narrative that will keep readers gripped while providing a powerful insight into what life was like in the days leading up to the First World War.

A Word from the Author

Author Alan Reynolds

Imagine you were a backstreet baker in a typical Yorkshire mill town in June 1914. What things would be exercising your mind as you mixed your ingredients for the day’s bread run? Industrial unrest, the women’s movement, social conditions, the class system; all of these issues are reflected in this moving narrative as we follow the lives of Arthur Marsden and his family in the weeks leading up to the start of the First World War. In a far off country, however, a murder has taken place, the implications of which were to change their fortunes forever.

The Baker’s Story was inspired by a fascination with a period of history I had little knowledge about and as I researched the era extensively, I became drawn to the trials and tribulations affecting working-class people. Anyone who has an interest in social history, or just a love of a soap opera drama, will enjoy reading this book.
