As San Francisco’s Chinatown prepares for the Lunar New Year festivities in the fogbound month of February, astrologer Julia Bonatti finds herself with three new clients, all in desperate straits who don’t seem to heed her advice. Tracy is the victim of a brutal husband with nowhere to run and Jeanette is worried sick about her son, whom she suspects has fallen in with a bad lot. But most frightening of all to Julia is Frankie Chang’s dilemma. Frankie’s only eleven years old and he’s terrified. His mother is missing and no one will help him. Julia’s heart goes out to him but her hands are tied. Frankie won’t let her talk to the police and neither will his family. Julia eventually discovers that the three worlds of her clients intertwine. Those lives inevitably collide exposing a dangerous smuggling cabal. Julia knows too much and becomes a victim of both a ruthless environmental group and criminals who will stop at nothing, including murder.

A Word from the Author

Author Connie di Marco Picture

I knew when I first started to write the Zodiac Mysteries that I wanted to set this series in that beautiful city by the bay. Beautiful, yes, but full of misty alleyways and hidden stairways and crime, just like any other place on earth. And in every book in the series, I’ve tried to bring the city to life – to those who love it and for those who have never seen it.

One of my favorite neighborhoods in San Francisco is Chinatown, the most unique Chinatown in the United States. The building facades are exotic, the ornate lampposts are encircled with dragons and the streets are lined with red lanterns. I had often thought of setting a mystery against the backdrop of the Chinese Lunar New Year festivities and the plot of Serpent’s Doom presented the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Across the street from the border of Chinatown, The Mystic Eye occult bookshop hosts psychic fairs for its patrons and whenever Julia has the time, she sits in as the visiting astrologer for quick consultations. But one particular psychic fair brings her three new clients, all in desperate straits – a terrified wife, a desperate child, and a missing mother. Julia little suspects how the lives of these clients are intertwined and will lead her on a dangerous mission to uncover a deadly smuggling cabal.
