‘Welcome to the Guardians of Time Training Camp, 009 Lives!’ The robed figure threw back his head and laughed. ‘I might have known you’d be the first to question why you’ve been brought here. You’ve already been on too many missions to meekly accept your presence here without a word. You are here undercover, and this is all very hush, hush. Do you understand?’
Bewildered, Max shook his head uncertainly. ‘Does that mean we’re not allowed to speak?’
‘It means that everything that takes place here is top secret, 009 Lives.’

Max’s Midnight Adventure by Wendy Leighton-Porter

Struggling to break loose, Max thrust his head out through the tangle of tinsel and took a few gulps of air. From downstairs, he heard the distant chimes of Uncle Richard’s grandfather clock and counted as it struck twelve times. It was midnight. A second later, a mop of tumbling golden curls appeared beside him, followed by a scowling face. Emerging from the jumble of Christmas decorations, the fairy furiously waved two halves of a stick in front of him. A bent star dangled from the end of one of them.
‘Look at this. You’ve bust my wand, you clumsy oaf!’
