A Word from the Author

Max’s Arabian Adventure is the first of several solo mini-adventures for Max the talking Tonkinese cat.

This novella, which accompanies the other stories in the Shadows from the Past series, sends the unsuspecting Max on a trip from which he fears he may never return. Snatched from his family home while standing too close to a strange, old book – Shadows from the Past – which Max and his four young time-travelling companions now know to be a portal into the past, the large cat is horrified to find himself in the house of an evil magician who has lined him up to perform an important task. His destination is the Rub’ Al Khali, or Empty Quarter, the largest uninterrupted sand desert in the world – a hostile environment for the comfort-loving feline.

With a nod to the tale of Aladdin, Max discovers that he’s at the mercy of the magician who instructs him to fetch a magic lamp, buried deep in an underground chamber. When his mission doesn’t quite go according to plan, the poor cat is abandoned in the middle of the desert where he is unlikely to survive, until he is saved by the intervention of two local animals who take pity on him. Ghazala the camel and Falak the falcon rescue Max from certain death, but how will he find his way back to his home and family? Let’s just say that it’s only possible with the help of a little magic…
