A Word from the Author

A perfect Hallowe’en story for Middle Grade readers, the fourteenth book in the Shadows from the Past series sends Max the talking Tonkinese cat on his fifth solo adventure. This proves to be a nerve-wracking ordeal for the lily-livered feline when he finds himself in a 17th century Essex village, at a time when Matthew Hopkins, the notorious Witchfinder General, is on the hunt for those practising witchcraft in that area. It certainly wouldn’t be a good idea to let it slip that you just happen to be a talking cat, thanks to the magic charm you wear on your collar – so watch out, Max!

The time-travelling cat discovers that he’s been summoned into the past by Goodwife Clowes, a supposedly innocent old lady whose sister is in great peril, having been arrested by Hopkins. Hmmm, just how did Goody Clowes manage to bring the feline hero from the future, if not without the help of magic? And now, poor Max is expected to face the Witchfinder in order to save her sister. It soon becomes apparent that he will need help and Goody Clowes sends him home to fetch reinforcements, in the shape of his usual time-travelling companions – Jemima and Joe Lancelot, and their best friend Charlie, which means that this story leads directly into the chilling sequel, The Shadow of the Witchfinder
